Part Three: The Second Delivery

Simon half-expected to go on another crazy delivery for the Company on his very next shift at the restaurant, but an entire week passed before Mr Edwards told him to grab coffee on his way back after his last delivery for the day. The older man was waiting for him with a bottle of whiskey in his office, and Simon had grabbed another from a bottle shop. Cuddles had only gone to help his mum after he’d signed a contract and completed his first delivery, but that was more than enough to earn Simon’s eternal gratitude. In the week since, his mum had gone from strength to strength. It turned out that Cuddles had done more than cure her. He’d left her in excellent physical shape too. Cuddles hadn’t done anything to Simon’s dad, but his dad already looked ten years younger too. His dad was smiling and upbeat in a way he hadn’t been since his mum got sick.

Simon had also gone behind his parents’ back by using almost all of his pay from his first delivery to start paying off the debt they’d run up during his mum’s treatment. His dad hadn’t been happy about it, but he’d calmed down a bit after Simon had told him more about his promotion at work. He’d mentioned the big jump in pay but left out the bit where he was working for a cosmic guinea pig and making deliveries to other worlds.

“You shouldn’t have to pay,” his dad had told him. “I’m your father. That money should be going toward your future. It’s my responsibility to pay it, not yours.”

“I’m not paying it because I have to,” Simon had replied. “I’m paying it because I want to. It’s my money, so it’s my choice, and I’m choosing to help.”

His dad had thanked him and then said something that had lingered in Simon’s mind ever since.

“Look at you,” his dad had said. “You’ll always be our boy, son, but you’ve gone and grown up on us. You’re a man now, and a damn good one too.”

A man? Simon had always looked up to his father. To hear those words…

He shook his head. He needed to focus on the present and get his head in the game. “Another delivery, Mr Edwards?”

“Yes. Are you feeling up to it?”

“I’ll get it done.” Simon grinned. He was still getting his mind around how generously a single delivery paid. All of that for one delivery? Admittedly, he had been attacked by demons and had helped end a demonic civil war, but still… it had been a lot.

When he’d asked Mr Edwards about how to handle his taxes, the older man had assured him that the Company would be taking care of it. Apparently, come tax time, they’d be doing his tax return free of charge. They had experts – actual accountants – qualified in the tax laws of countless worlds. If it came down to it – not that they expected it
